Nawfal bin Musahiq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the governor ('amil) of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), was speaking with him when he made him angry, so Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) picked up a handful (of pebbles) from the ground of al-Batha' and threw them at him (Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunayf, may Allah be pleased with him). A stone from it struck his forehead and wounded him, and blood began to flow onto his beard. It was as if Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) felt regret (at this), so he said: Wipe the blood from your beard. Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Commander of the Believers! Do not let this trouble you. By Allah, the wrong I have done to those over whom you appointed me is far greater than what you have done to me. The narrator said: It was as if this statement of his greatly pleased Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he increased his kindness towards him.
