حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: سَلَّمَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ، فَقَالَ: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْأَمِيرُ - وَعِنْدَهُ رَهْطٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ - فَقَالُوا: مَنْ هَذَا الْمُنَافِقُ الَّذِي قَصَّرَ فِي تَحِيَّةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ: «إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ قَدْ عَابُوا عَلَيَّ شَيْئًا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ، أَمَا إِنِّي قَدْ حَيَّيْتُ بِهَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرَ، وَعُثْمَانَ رَحِمَهُمُ اللهُ» ، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: إِنِّي لَإِخَالُهُ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ الَّذِي يَقُولُ، وَلَكِنَّ أَهْلَ الشَّامِ حِينَ وَقَعَتِ الْفِتْنَةُ قَالُوا: وَاللهِ لَنَعْرِفَنَّ دِينِنَا وَلَا نُقَصِّرُ تَحِيَّةَ خَلِيفَتِنَا، وَإِنِّي لَإِخَالُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ تَقُولُونَ لِعَامِلِ الصَّدَقَةِ: أَمِيرٌ
Al-Zuhri said: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) greeted Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), saying: As-salamu 'alayka ayyuha al-amir (Peace be upon you, O Amir), and with him was a group of the people of Sham. They said: Who is this hypocrite who has fallen short in greeting the Commander of the Believers? At this Sayyiduna Uthman (bin Hunayf) (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): "These people have objected to something in me which you know well; I greeted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) in this very (manner)." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I think there is some truth in what he says, but when the tribulation broke out, the people of Sham said: By Allah, we will know our religion well and we will not fall short in greeting our Caliph. And I think that you, O people of Madinah, call even the official who collects the charity an Amir.
