حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَمْزَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ، ثنا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ صَدَقَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَهْبٍ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيِّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ، قَالَ: «إِنَّ النَّاسَ شَجَرَةٌ ذَاتُ جَنى، وَيُوشِكُ أَنْ تَعُودُوا شَجَرَةً ذَاتَ شَوْكٍ، إِنْ نَاقَدْتَهُمْ نَاقَدُوكَ، وَإِنْ تَرَكْتَهُمْ لَمْ يَتْرُكُوكَ، وَإِنْ هَرَبْتَ مِنْهُمْ طَلَبُوكَ» . قَالَ: فَكَيْفَ الْمَخْرَجُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «تُقْرِضُهُمْ مِنْ عِرْضِكَ لِيَوْمِ فَاقَتِكَ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People are like a fruit-bearing tree, and soon you will become a thorny tree. If you criticise them, they will criticise you; if you leave them, they will not leave you; and if you flee from them, they will pursue you." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, then what is the way out of this?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lend them something of your honour by bearing with them, for the day of your need."
