حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ زِبْرِيقٍ الْحِمْصِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ ضَمْضَمَ بْنِ زُرْعَةَ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي جُبَيْرُ بْنُ نُفَيْرٍ، وكَثِيرُ بْنُ مُرَّةَ، وعَمْرُو بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ، وَالْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ مَعَدِي كَرِبَ، وأَبُو أُمَامَةَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَمَا هَذَا الْأَمْرُ إِلَّا فِي قَوْمِكَ؟ قَالَ: «بَلَى» . قَالَ: فَوَصِّهِمْ بِنَا، فَقَالَ لِقُرَيْشٍ: «إِنِّي أُحَذِّرُكُمِ اللهَ أَنْ تَشُقُّوا عَلَى أُمَّتِي مِنْ بَعْدِي»
ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلنَّاسِ: «سَيَكُونُ مِنْ بَعْدِي أُمَرَاءُ، فَأَدُّوا إِلَيْهِمْ طَاعَتَهُمْ، فَإِنَّ الْأَمِيرَ مِثْلُ الْمِجَنِّ يُتَّقَى بِهِ، فَإِنْ صَلَحُوا واتَّقَوْا وَأَمَرُوكُمْ بِخَيْرٍ فَلَكُمْ وَلَهُمْ، وَإِنْ أَسَاؤُوا وَأَمَرُوكُمْ فَعَلَيْهِمْ، وَأَنْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ بَرَاءٌ، وَإِنَّ الْأَمِيرَ إِذَا ابْتَغَى الرِّيبَةَ فِي النَّاسِ أَفْسَدَهُمْ»
ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلنَّاسِ: «سَيَكُونُ مِنْ بَعْدِي أُمَرَاءُ، فَأَدُّوا إِلَيْهِمْ طَاعَتَهُمْ، فَإِنَّ الْأَمِيرَ مِثْلُ الْمِجَنِّ يُتَّقَى بِهِ، فَإِنْ صَلَحُوا واتَّقَوْا وَأَمَرُوكُمْ بِخَيْرٍ فَلَكُمْ وَلَهُمْ، وَإِنْ أَسَاؤُوا وَأَمَرُوكُمْ فَعَلَيْهِمْ، وَأَنْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ بَرَاءٌ، وَإِنَّ الْأَمِيرَ إِذَا ابْتَغَى الرِّيبَةَ فِي النَّاسِ أَفْسَدَهُمْ»
It is narrated from Jubayr bin Nufayr, Kathir bin Murrah, Amr bin al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on them), Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib and Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, will the caliphate remain only among your people (Quraysh)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: Then enjoin them to treat us well. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Quraysh: "I warn you by Allah against causing hardship to my Ummah after me."
Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: "After me there will be rulers, so render to them the obedience due to them, for the ruler is like a shield by which one is protected. If they are righteous, fear Allah and command you to do good, the reward of it is for you and for them. And if they do evil and command you to do evil, its burden is upon them and you are free of it. And when the ruler seeks out faults and suspicions among the people, he corrupts them."
