Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 6321 — We lived in a settlement past which would

Sayyiduna Amr bin Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We lived in a settlement past which would come those who had been to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they would say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said such, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said such. So from that I memorised a good deal of the Qur'an. Then my father went as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with some people of his tribe. He (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them the prayer and said: "Let the one of you who recites the most Qur'an lead you in prayer." The narrator said: I knew the most Qur'an among them because I had memorised more, so I used to lead them in prayer. I had a striped cloak on me, and whenever I prostrated, it would slip off me. So a woman of the people said: Cover your reciter's private parts from us. So they bought me a shirt of Omani cloth, and after Islam I was never as happy with anything as I was with it. So I continued to lead them in prayer while I was seven or eight years old.
