Sayyiduna Amr bin Salamah Abu Yazid al-Jarmi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We lived by a watering place which was a route for people, and we used to ask them: What is this matter? They would say: There is a man who claims that he is a prophet, that Allah has sent him, and that Allah has revealed to him such and such. So whatever I heard of it, I would memorise, as though it were glued into my chest, until I had gathered a great deal of the Qur'an from it. The narrator said: The Arabs were waiting for the Conquest (of Makkah) before accepting Islam, and they would say: Keep watching; if he prevails over them, then he is truthful and he is a prophet. When the news of the Conquest reached us, every people hastened with the Islam of their people. So my father went with the Islam of the people of this settlement of ours, and stayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as long as Allah willed, then he came back. When he drew near to us, we went out to meet him, and when we saw him he said: By Allah, I have truly come to you from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: Then he said: "He commands you to do such and such, and forbids you from such and such, and that you should pray such a prayer at such a time; and when the time of prayer comes, let one of you call the adhan, and let the one of you who knows the most Qur'an lead you in prayer." The narrator said: So they looked among the people of our settlement and found no one who knew more Qur'an than me, because of how much I had memorised from the riders. So they put me in front of them, and I used to lead them in prayer while I was six years old. The narrator said: I had a striped cloak on me, and whenever I prostrated, it would shrink up off me. The narrator said: So a woman of the tribe said: Will you not cover your reciter's backside from us? The narrator said: So they clothed me in a shirt made of cloth woven in Bahrain, and I was never as happy with anything as I was with that shirt.
