حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، ثنا الصَّلْتُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، ثنا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ: كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ تَعْرِضُ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ، فَخَفَّضَ فِيهَا الْبَصَرَ وَرَفَعَهُ، فَلَمْ يُرْجِعْهَا، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، زَوِّجْنِيهَا، قَالَ: «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» ، قَالَ: لَا، وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا عِنْدِي مِنْ شَيْءٍ، قَالَ: «وَلَا خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ؟» قَالَ: وَلَا خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ، وَلَكِنْ أَشُقُّ بُرْدِي هَذِهِ، وأُعْطِيهَا وَآخُذُ النِّصْفَ، فَقَالَ: «لَا، وَلَكِنْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: «اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a woman came and offered herself to him in marriage. He (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered his gaze regarding her and then raised it, but gave her no reply. Then a man from among his Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Marry her to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have anything?" He said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! I have nothing. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not even an iron ring?" He said: Not even an iron ring, but I will tear this sheet of mine, give half to her and keep half for myself. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No; rather, tell me, do you know anything of the Qur'an?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go, I have married her to you for what you have of the Qur'an."
