Abu Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I was with Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) when it was said to him: Something had happened between Banu Amr bin Awf and the people of Quba. He said: That is an old matter; it did happen. We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when someone came and it was said to him: Something has happened among the people of Quba. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards them to make peace between them, but he was delayed (in returning). So Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Shall I not call the iqamah for the prayer? He said: As you wish. So he called the iqamah and the people put Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) forward. While he was leading the prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and began making his way through the rows until he stood behind Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the people began to clap. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not look around in prayer, but when the clapping increased, he turned and saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing behind him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to continue leading the prayer as he was, but he stepped back and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished, he said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "What prevented you from leading the prayer when I had ordered you to?" He replied: It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to go ahead of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is this clapping in prayer? Tasbih (saying Subhan Allah) is only for men, and clapping is for women."
