Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 5888 — Through the same chain: The Messenger

Through the same chain: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Banu Amr bin Awf, and meanwhile the time for prayer came. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Bakr, the time for prayer has come and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has been delayed; will you lead the people in prayer? He said: If you wish. So Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the iqamah and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and the people began clapping. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not turn around in his prayer, but when the people clapped a great deal, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) standing in the row. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hand and praised Allah, then walked backwards until he joined the row. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, he turned to the people and said: "O people, what is the matter with you that when something happened during the prayer you began clapping? Clapping is only for women. Whoever has something happen to him during his prayer should say 'Subhan Allah', for whoever hears it will turn his attention to him. O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from leading the prayer when I gestured to you?" Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It does not befit the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
