Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 5866 — Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd relates

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that a woman brought the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a woven cloak whose border was woven into it, and said: O Messenger of Allah, I wove this cloak with my own hands, and I have brought it to clothe you with it. Then a man, whom the narrator named, felt it and said: O Messenger of Allah, how beautiful this cloak is! Clothe me with it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) went inside, he folded it and sent it to that man. The people said: By Allah, you did not do well. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was given this cloak to wear while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in need of it, and you knew that he never turns away one who asks, yet you still asked him for it? The man said: By Allah, I did not ask for it in order to wear it; rather, I asked for it so that it would be my shroud on the day I die. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "And when he died, it was indeed his shroud."
