Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a burdah (cloak). Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the people: Do you know what a burd is? The people said: It is a woven sheet with a border. The woman said: O Messenger of Allah, I have come to clothe you with this. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took it, being in need of it, and put it on. One of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions saw it on him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, how beautiful this is; clothe me with it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well." When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up, his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions blamed that man and said: You did not do well. You saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took it being in need of it, then you asked him for it, although you knew that whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) is asked for anything, he never refuses. He said: By Allah, nothing moved me to do this except that I hoped for its blessing because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had worn it, so that perhaps I may be shrouded in it.
