Mahmud bin Labid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was among the people with the most beautiful voices in reciting the Qur'an. One night he was reciting while his horse was tied near him and his son was sleeping by his side. The horse began circling in its tether; he recited (again), and the horse (again) circled in its tether; he recited (again), and the horse (again) circled in its tether. So he stopped and picked up his son, fearing that the horse might trample him. In the morning he mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Usayd! You should have kept reciting, for the angels kept listening to your voice. Had you kept reciting, by morning a canopy would have formed between the heaven and the earth which the people could see, with the angels in it."
