Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I found a man with my wife; shall I kill him with the sword?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What witness could be clearer than the sword?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back on it and said: "This is the Book of our Lord." Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, what witness could be clearer than the sword?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Book of Allah, and a witness (present) there." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O company of the Ansar, this is your chief; his jealousy provoked him to the point that he said something contrary to the Book of Allah." At this a man from the Ansar said: "O Messenger of Allah, Sa'd is a very jealous man. Because of his jealousy he has never married a thayyib (previously married) woman, and because of his jealousy none of us has been able to marry a woman whom he has divorced." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sa'd is jealous, and I am more jealous than him, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is more jealous than me." At this a man from the Ansar said: "Over what does Allah Almighty become jealous?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is jealous that the family of a man striving in the path of Allah should be betrayed in his absence."
