Abayah bin Rifa'ah bin Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his grandfather Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Dhu al-Hulayfah, and we obtained some camels and sheep (as spoils). Some people went ahead among the hasty ones, slaughtered (the animals) and set up their cooking pots before (the spoils) had been divided. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was at the rear of the people, passed by and saw that the pots had been set up. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is this?" It was said: O Messenger of Allah, they have slaughtered and cooked. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave orders about the cooking pots, and they were overturned. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the spoils be divided, so they were divided, and he set ten sheep in place of every camel. The narrator says: While we were in that state, one of the camels bolted. A man chased it, and another man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These camels too have a tendency to bolt like wild animals, so whichever of them gets out of your control, do this with it." Then my grandfather (Sayyiduna Rafi', may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, we fear that we will meet the polytheists tomorrow and we will have no knives. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah is mentioned, eat it, except a tooth or a nail. I will tell you the reason for that: the tooth is bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians."
