Hanzalah bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: "We, Banu Harith, had more farmland than any of the people of Madinah. We used to rent out land and stipulate with the tenant farmer that whatever was watered by the water channels and the stream would be ours, and whatever was watered by the small streams would be yours. Sometimes this would be lost and that would survive, and sometimes this would survive and that would be lost. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that. At that time we had no gold or silver by which we could know it (in a fixed amount)."
