Sayyiduna Khalid Abu Nafi' al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer with the people around him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would lead a light prayer, yet complete in its bowing and prostration. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat and prolonged the sitting, until some of us signalled to others to keep quiet, because revelation was coming down to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, some of the people said: O Messenger of Allah, you prolonged the sitting so much that some of us signalled to others that perhaps revelation was coming down to you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather this was a prayer of hope and fear. In it I asked Allah for three things; He granted me two and withheld one. I asked that He not send upon you a punishment like the one that came upon those before you. And I asked that He not set over your community an enemy that would destroy it, and He granted me that. And I asked that He not split you into factions and make you taste the violence of one another, and He did not grant me that." (Abu Malik al-Ashja'i said:) I asked Nafi': Did your father hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, I heard him say that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as many times as these ten fingers can count.
