Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned seventy men of the Ansar who, when night fell, would gather with a teacher in Madinah and spend the night studying the Qur'an. When morning came, whoever had strength would bring firewood and fetch sweet water, and whoever had means would obtain a goat and slaughter it, and in the morning it would be hanging by the apartment of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent them out, and among them was my maternal uncle, Sayyiduna Haram (may Allah be pleased with him). They reached a clan of Banu Sulaym, and Haram said to their commander: Shall I not tell these people that it is not them we are after, so that they leave our way clear? He went to them and told them that, and a man from among them confronted him with a spear and drove it right through him. When Haram felt the point of the spear in his belly, he said: Allahu Akbar! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, I have succeeded. Then they (the enemy) fell upon them, and not one of them was left to bring the news. I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) grieve over any expedition as much as he grieved over them. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), whenever he prayed the Fajr prayer, raise his hands and supplicate against them." After that, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said to me: Would you like (to meet) the killer of Haram? I said: What is the matter with him? May Allah do such and such to him. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not say that, for he has become Muslim.
