حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ قَرِيبٍ الْأَصْمَعِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَوْنٍ، يَقُولُ: هَؤُلَاءِ الْخِيَارُ قُتِلُوا قَتْلًا، ثُمَّ بَكَى، فَقَالَ: قَاتِلُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى الزُّبَيْرِ فَأَقْبَلَ الزُّبَيْرُ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: أُذَكِّرُكَ اللهَ، فَكَفَّ عَنْهُ الزُّبَيْرُ حَتَّى فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ مِرَارًا، فَقَالَ الزُّبَيْرُ: «قَاتَلَهُ اللهُ يُذَكِّرُ بِاللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَيَنْسَاهُ»
Al-Asma'i said: I heard Ibn Awn say: These best of people were killed outright. Then the narrator wept and said: The man who (later) became al-Zubayr's killer advanced towards al-Zubayr, and al-Zubayr turned towards him. He said: I adjure you by Allah. So al-Zubayr held back from him, and he kept doing this several times. Then al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah destroy him! He reminds others of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, yet he himself forgets Him."
