Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when some people came to him wrapped in striped woollen cloaks, with swords hanging from their shoulders. They had no lower garments, nor anything other than those (cloaks). Most of them, rather all of them, were from the tribe of Mudar. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw their hardship, nakedness and hunger, his face (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) went into his house. Then he came to the mosque and prayed Zuhr, then he climbed a small pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "To proceed: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has revealed in His Book: 'O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul' [Surah al-Nisa: 1] to the end of the verse, and 'O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow' [Surah al-Hashr: 18] up to His words: 'They are the successful ones' [Surah al-Hashr: 20]. Give charity before you are no longer able to give charity. Let a man give charity from his dinar, let a man give charity from his dirham, let a man give charity from his wheat, let a man give charity from his dates, from his barley. Do not consider any charity insignificant, even if it is only half a date." Then a man from the Ansar stood up with a bundle in his palm, and he handed it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the pulpit. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took it, and joy became visible on his face. Then he said: "Whoever introduces a good practice and it is acted upon will have its reward and the like of the reward of those who act upon it, without anything being reduced from their rewards. And whoever introduces an evil practice and it is acted upon will bear its sin and the sin of those who act upon it after him, without anything being reduced from their sins." Then the people stood up and dispersed; one had a dinar and another a dirham. Then it was all gathered together, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it among them.
