It is narrated from Ikrimah that some people of Madinah asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a woman who begins menstruating after Tawaf al-Ifadah. He said: She may depart. They said: We do not care whether you give us a ruling or not, while Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) says that she may not depart. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I only say what I know, and I do not care whether you accept it or not; but when you reach Madinah, ask Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) and others. (The narrator, Umm Sulaym, said:) I told them that Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her): Are you to bring us disappointment? You are holding us back. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter?" Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Safiyyah has begun menstruating. It was said: She has already performed Tawaf al-Ifadah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then no (she will not hold us back)." The narrator said: So they went back to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: We found the hadith just as you had told us.
