Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) had a son by Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), and he died. She said to her household: "Do not tell Abu Talhah about my son's death until I myself tell him." The narrator said: He came, and she placed his supper and drink before him, and he ate and drank. Then she adorned herself for him better than she used to do before. When he had eaten and drunk his fill, he had relations with her. When she was sure that he had eaten his fill, drunk his fill and fulfilled his need of her, she said: "O Abu Talhah! What do you think: if a household lent something to their neighbours and then asked for their loan back, would they have the right to withhold their loan?" He said: "No." She said: "Then leave the matter of your son to Allah and hope for His reward (he has died)." The narrator said: He became angry and said: "You left me alone until I became soiled as I became soiled, and now you tell me of my son's death?" So he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Have you seen what Umm Sulaym did?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah bless the two of you in the rest of your night." The narrator said: So she conceived that very night. The narrator said: Later she and Abu Talhah were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when they drew near Madinah, labour pains came upon her, so Abu Talhah stayed back with her and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on ahead. The narrator said: Abu Talhah began to say: "O my Lord! You know that I used to love going out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and entering with him whenever he entered, and now this wife of mine has been held back by the state You see." The narrator said: Abu Talhah says that Umm Sulaym said: "O Abu Talhah! I do not feel the pain I was feeling before; set off with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator said: So he set off until he arrived in Madinah with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); then her labour pains began and she gave birth to a son. My mother said to me: "O Anas! Do not feed him anything until you take him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the morning." The narrator said: I spent the whole night watching over him while he kept crying, until morning came; then I took him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had a branding iron in his hand. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the child with me, he said: "Perhaps Umm Sulaym has given birth?" I said: "Yes." The narrator said: So he (peace and blessings be upon him) put down the branding iron and sat down; I brought the child and placed him in his (peace and blessings be upon him) lap. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called for an Ajwah date of Madinah, chewed it in his mouth until it dissolved, then put it into the child's mouth, and the child began smacking his lips. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Look at the Ansar's love of dates." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over his face and named him Abdullah.
