Umm Salamah al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that one of the women said: O Messenger of Allah, what is this good thing (ma'ruf) in which we have been forbidden to disobey you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not wail (over the dead)." I said: O Messenger of Allah, the people of such-and-such a tribe helped me in wailing at the death of my cousin so-and-so (that is, by custom they had a claim on me), so I must repay them. But he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me. I asked him repeatedly, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted me to repay them. After repaying them, I have neither wailed nor done anything else like it to this day, and there is no woman left, other than me, who has not wailed.
