Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat before him (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Messenger of Allah, you know my sincere devotion and my precedence in Islam, and I — and I — He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is it?" He said: Marry Fatimah to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, or he said: he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went back to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I am ruined, and I have ruined you too. He asked: What is it? He said: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Fatimah's hand, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Stay here until I go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask for the same thing you asked for. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat before him (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Messenger of Allah, you know my sincere devotion and my precedence in Islam, and I — and I — He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is it?" He said: Marry Fatimah to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him too. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went back to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) is waiting for Allah's command concerning her. Come, let us go to Ali so that we may tell him to ask for the same thing we asked for. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The two of them came to me while I was on the road, and they said: Your uncle's daughter is being sought in marriage. So they alerted me to the matter, and I got up dragging my cloak, one end on my shoulder and the other on the ground, until I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat before him (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Messenger of Allah, you know my precedence in Islam and my sincere devotion, and I — and I — He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is it, O Ali?" I said: Marry Fatimah to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you have?" I said: My horse and my coat of mail. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for your horse, you need it; but sell your coat of mail." So I sold it for four hundred and eighty and brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed it in his (peace and blessings be upon him) lap. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of it and said: "O Bilal, buy us some perfume with it, and tell them to prepare her." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) provided for them a bed woven with palm-fibre cords and a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, and filled the house with sand. And he said: "When she comes to you, do not do anything until I come to you." She came with Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) and sat in one corner of the house, and I was in the other corner. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "Is my brother here?" Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Your brother? You have married your daughter to him! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered and said to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Bring me some water." She got up and went to a vessel in the house, put water in it and brought it to him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth into it, then said to her: "Stand up." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled that water on her chest and on her head, then said: "O Allah, I commit her and her offspring to Your protection from Satan the accursed." Then he said to her: "Turn your back." She turned her back, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled between her shoulders, then said: "O Allah, I commit her and her offspring to Your protection from Satan the accursed." Then he said: "Bring me some water." I did what he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted: I filled the vessel with water and brought it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth into it, then poured it on my head and in front of me, then said: "O Allah, I commit him and his offspring to Your protection from Satan the accursed." Then he said: "Go in to your wife with the name of Allah and with blessing."
