It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked him over from head to foot, then said: "Nuwaybah (a small matter that is about to befall)." Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Is it a good nuwaybah or a bad one? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A good nuwaybah." He said: O Messenger of Allah, we are in a land where there is game; so what of it is lawful for us and what is unlawful? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The domestic donkey and every predator with fangs are unlawful, and whatever your bow and your trained dog bring back to you is lawful for you." Then he asked him about some matters concerning the People of the Book and about their vessels, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you can do without them, do not go near them; and if you need them, wash them, then eat and drink from them."
