It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, we are in the land of the People of the Book, and we eat with them from their vessels; and our land is a land of game: we hunt with the bow and with the trained dog, and also with a dog that is not trained. So tell me what of this is lawful for me and what is unlawful. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for what you mentioned, that you are in the land of the People of the Book and eat from their vessels: if you find vessels other than theirs, do not eat from them; and if you find nothing other than them, wash them and eat from them. And as for the matter of game: whatever you hunt with your bow and mention the name of Allah over, eat it; and whatever your untrained dog hunts, if you find it alive and are able to slaughter it, eat it, and if you are not able to slaughter it, do not eat from it; and whatever your trained dog hunts, eat what it holds for you, and mention the name of Allah over it."
