Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Masjid al-Khayf, and his Companions said to me: "O Wathilah, move back," meaning move away from in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him, for he has only come to ask." So I drew near and said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, tell us of something we may adopt after you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make your own self your helper." I said: "How am I to do that?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, even if a mufti gives you a fatwa." I said: "How am I to know that?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Place your hand on your heart, for the heart is at rest with what is lawful and is not at rest with what is unlawful; and the scrupulousness (wara') of a Muslim is that he leaves even a small thing for fear of falling into a big one." I said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you, what is tribalism ('asabiyyah)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who helps his people in wrongdoing." I said: "Who is the greedy one?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who seeks earnings by unlawful means." I said: "Who is the scrupulous one?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who stops at what is doubtful." I said: "Who is the believer?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one whom people trust with their wealth and their lives." I said: "Who is the Muslim?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one from whose tongue and hand people are safe." I said: "Which jihad is best?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Speaking a word of justice before a tyrannical ruler."
