حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُهَاجِرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَمِّ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، قَالَ: دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ زِيَادٌ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ كَانَ يَنْفَعُنَا بِالْعِلْمِ بِمُجَالَسَتِكَ، وَكُنْتَ تُحَدِّثُنَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ مَعْقِلٌ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ وَلِيَ مِنْ أَمَرِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ شَيْئًا فَلَمْ يُحِطْهُمْ بِنَصِيحَةٍ كَمَا يُحِيطُ أَهْلَ بَيْتِهِ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ» قَالَ: مَا سَمِعْتُ هَذَا مِنْكَ قَبْلَ الْيَوْمِ، قَالَ: «مَا كُنْتُ لِأُحَدِّثَكَ بِهِ إِلَّا وَأَنَا عَلَى حَالَتِي هَذِهِ» ، قَالَ: فَخَرَجَ زِيَادٌ يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ
The paternal cousin of Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Ziyad came to him and said: Allah Almighty has been benefiting us with knowledge through sitting with you, and you used to narrate hadith to us from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever is put in charge of any affair of the Muslims and does not surround them with sincere care as he surrounds his own household, let him take his seat in the Fire." He said: I never heard this hadith from you before today. He said: "I was not going to narrate it to you except in the state I am in now." Then Ziyad went out dragging his garment.
