حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْخَلَّالُ الْمَكِّيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، ثنا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ أَبِي شَبِيبٍ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَوْصِنِي، قَالَ: «اتَّقِ اللهَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ» قُلْتُ: زِدْنِي قَالَ: «أَتْبِعِ السَّيِّئَةَ الْحَسَنَةَ تَمْحُهَا» قُلْتُ: زِدْنِي، قَالَ: «خَالِقِ النَّاسَ بِخُلُقٍ حَسَنٍ»
Maymun bin Abi Shabib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, advise me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah wherever you are." I said: Tell me more. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Follow a bad deed with a good deed and it will wipe it out." I said: Tell me more. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Treat people with good character."
