Awf bin al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him), who was the maternal nephew of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates that the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) told him: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, regarding a sale or a gift that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had made: By Allah! Aishah must stop, or else I will place a restriction on her. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: Did he say that? The people said: Yes. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I take upon myself a vow to Allah that I will never speak a single word to Ibn al-Zubayr. When this boycott of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) had gone on long, he sought to have someone intercede for him, but Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: By Allah! I will not accept anyone's intercession concerning him, nor will I ever break this vow that I have made. When the matter had gone on long for Ibn al-Zubayr, he spoke to Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah and Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth (may Allah be pleased with them both) - and both of them were from the tribe of Zuhrah - and said to them: I adjure you by Allah to take me in to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), for it is not lawful for her to make a vow to cut me off. So Sayyiduna al-Miswar and Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with them both) set off with Ibn al-Zubayr wrapped in their cloaks, until they asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) for permission to enter and said: Peace be upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the mercy of Allah; may we come in? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Come in. They said: O Mother of the Believers! All of us? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: All of you come in - and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) did not know that Ibn al-Zubayr was with them. When they went in to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) went inside the curtain, embraced Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and began imploring her and weeping. Sayyiduna al-Miswar and Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with them both) also began imploring Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) to speak to him and forgive him, and they said to her: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade this kind of cutting off, as you know, for it is not lawful for a Muslim to cut off his brother for more than three nights." When they had reminded Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) again and again and made her fearful, she too began reminding them and weeping, saying: I made a vow, and a vow is a very serious matter. They kept insisting with her until she spoke to Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both), and she freed forty slaves for that vow of hers. Afterwards, even after freeing forty slaves, she would remember that vow of hers and weep until her tears soaked her head-covering.
