Sayyiduna Jundub bin Abdullah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Ghalib bin Abdullah al-Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him), of Kalb Awf bin Layth, with a detachment in which I too was included, and he ordered him to launch a raid on Banu al-Mulawwih at al-Kadid. He said: So we set out until, when we reached Qudayd, we met al-Harith bin al-Barsa' al-Laythi and seized him. He said: I have only come to accept Islam; I set out intending to go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: We said: If you are a Muslim, being tied up for one night will not harm you; and if you are something else, then we will tie you up firmly. So we tied him up firmly. Then we left over him a short, dark-skinned companion of ours and said to him: If he struggles with you, cut off his head. Then we reached al-Kadid at sunset, and we were on one side of the valley. My companions sent me as a lookout for them to a hillock overlooking the encampment. He said: I climbed it until, when I reached its top and looked at the people, I lay down flat. By Allah, I was still watching it when a man came out of his tent and said to his wife: By Allah, I see a dark shape that I did not see at the beginning of the day; look into your vessels, lest the dogs have dragged off some of them. So she looked, and the woman said: By Allah, I find nothing missing from my vessels. He said: Give me my bow. So she gave him a bow and two arrows with it. He said: Then he shot an arrow, and by Allah it did not miss my side. He said: I pulled it out and held still. He said: Then he shot the other, and it struck my shoulder; I pulled it out too and held still. Then he said to his wife: If this were something that moves (a living thing), it would have stirred by now; both my arrows have pierced it. So when morning comes, look for them and pick them up, lest the dogs ruin them. He said: Then he went inside, until, when the people had come back with their camels and goats, having milked them and settled down at ease, we launched a sudden attack on them. We killed some of them and drove off the goats, then we set off with them. The crier of the people went off to his tribe, and a great many people gathered to them, and they came out in pursuit of us, until we passed by Ibn al-Barsa' and took him along with us, together with our companion whom we had left behind. He said: Then the people drew near us until we could see them, with nothing between us and them except the valley; they were facing us on one side, and from the other side they were pursuing us. Just then Allah Almighty sent, from wherever He willed, rain such as we had never seen before, which no one could cross. I saw them standing and looking at us while we were driving our mounts, and not one of them could reach us, until, when we had climbed the hill, I cannot forget the words of a reciter of rajaz from among the Muslims who was driving them from behind, saying:
Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) refused that you (O flock) should go far off to graze in a lush pasture whose grass has grown thick,
Its tips yellow like the colour of gold.
