حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْمَكِّيُّ، ثنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةََ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مِنَّا رِجَالٌ يَتَطَيَّرُونَ، فَقَالَ: «ذَاكَ شَيْءٌ تَجِدُونَهُ فِي صُدُورِكُمْ، فَلَا يَضُرَّكُمْ» ، قُلْتُ: وَمِنَّا رِجَالٌ يَأْتُونَ الْكُهَّانَ، قَالَ: «فَلَا تَأْتُوهُمْ» ، قُلْتُ: وَمِنَّا رِجَالٌ يَخُطُّونَ، قَالَ: «خَطَّ نَبِيٌّ، فَمَنْ وَافَقَ عَلِمَهُ عَلِمَ»
Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin al-Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, among us are men who take evil omens." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is something you feel in your breasts; it does not harm you." I said: "And among us are men who go to soothsayers." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do not go to them." I said: "And among us are men who draw lines (in the sand)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A prophet used to draw lines, so whoever happens to match his knowledge, let him know."
