Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 16974 — from Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan

Abu Qabil narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he ascended the pulpit on Friday and said in his sermon: The wealth is our wealth and the fay' (spoils obtained without fighting) is our fay'; we will give to whomever we wish and withhold from whomever we wish. No one answered him. When the second Friday came, he said the same thing again, and no one answered him. When the third Friday came, he said the same thing again, and a man from among those present in the mosque stood up to him and said: Not at all! The wealth is our wealth and the fay' is our fay'; whoever comes between us and it, we will take him to the judgement of Allah with our swords. So Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came down from the pulpit, sent for that man and had him brought inside, and the people said: This man is finished. Then the people went in and found the man with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) on the throne, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the people: This man has revived me; may Allah keep him alive. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "After me there will be rulers who will speak and no one will answer them back; they will tumble into Hell as monkeys tumble over one another." I spoke on the first Friday and no one answered me, and I feared that I might be one of them. Then I spoke on the second Friday and still no one answered me, so I said to myself: I am one of those people. Then I spoke on the third Friday, and this man stood up and answered me, so he revived me; may Allah keep him alive.
