Ubadah bin al-Walid bin Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My father and I went out to seek knowledge among this clan of the Ansar before they passed away. The first person we met was Sayyiduna Abu al-Yasar al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). With him was a slave of his; he was wearing a cloak, and his slave was wearing a cloak and a Ma'afiri garment, and (he had with him) a bundle of written pages. My father said to him: "I see some trace of anger on your face." He said: "Yes. So-and-so son of so-and-so al-Harami owed me some money (a debt). I went to his family and asked: 'Is he here?' They said: 'No.' Then a young son of his came out to me, and I asked him: 'Where is your father?' He said: 'He heard your voice and slipped into my mother's canopied bed.' I said: 'Come out to me, I know where you are.' He came out to me, and I said: 'What made you hide from me?' He said: 'By Allah! I will tell you and I will not lie to you. By Allah! I feared that if I spoke to you I would lie to you, or if I made you a promise I would break it, while you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); and by Allah! I was in hardship.' (Then the oath was questioned and answered thus:) 'By Allah?' 'By Allah!' 'By Allah?' 'By Allah!' 'By Allah?' 'By Allah!' Then I took out that written record and erased my claim from it, and said: 'If you find the means to pay, then pay; otherwise you are released from it.' So I bear witness that these two eyes of mine saw" - and he placed his two fingers on his eyes - "and these two ears of mine heard" - and he placed his two fingers in his ears - "and this heart of mine retained it" - and he pointed to the place of his heart - "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'Whoever gives respite to someone in hardship or forgives for him, Allah will shade him in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His shade.'"
I said to him: "Uncle! If you were to take your slave's cloak and give him your Ma'afiri garment, and take his Ma'afiri garment and give him your cloak, then you would have a complete outfit and he would have a complete outfit." He stroked my head and said: "O Allah, bless him. Nephew! These two eyes of mine saw, and these two ears of mine heard, and my heart retained it" - and he pointed to his two eyes, his two ears and the place of his heart - "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'Feed them (the slaves) from what you eat, and clothe them from what you wear.' And I would rather give him something of the wealth of this world than have him take some of my good deeds on the Day of Resurrection."
