Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 16427 — I was sitting with the Messenger

Sayyiduna Abu al-Yasar al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when Abu Amir al-Ash'ari came to him and said: "You (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on such-and-such a task, then I reached Mu'tah. When the people had formed their ranks, Ja'far mounted his horse, put on armour, took hold of the banner and advanced until he came face to face with the enemy. Then he called out: 'Who will deliver this (thing) to its owner?' A man among the people said: 'I will.' So he sent it with him, then went forward and kept fighting with his sword until he was martyred." Then tears flowed from the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Zuhr prayer, then went inside and did not speak to us. Then the iqamah for Asr was called, and he came out and led the prayer, then went inside and did not speak to us. He did the same at Maghrib and Isha, going inside and not speaking to us, although whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer he would turn his face towards us. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us at Fajr at the hour at which he usually came out, while Abu Amir al-Ash'ari and I were sitting, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat between us and said: "Shall I not tell you of a dream that I saw? I entered Paradise and saw Ja'far with two wings stained with blood, and Zayd was opposite him, and Ibn Rawahah was with them, but it was as though he was turning away from them. I will tell you the reason for that: when Ja'far went forward and saw death, he did not turn his face away, and Zayd did the same, but Ibn Rawahah turned his face away."
