حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ، ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرِيبٍ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ وَبِيَدِهِ عَصًا فَرَأَى أَقْنَاءً مُعَلَّقَةً فَطَعَنَ فِي قِنْوٍ مِنْهَا، فَإِذَا فِيهِ حَشَفٌ، فَقَالَ: «مَنْ صَاحِبُ هَذَا؟ لَوْ تَصَدَّقَ بِأَطْيَبِ مِنْهُ، إِنَّ صَاحِبَ هَذَا لِيَأْكُلُ الْحَشَفَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ: «يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ لَتَدَعُنَّهَا لِلْعَوَافِي أَرْبَعِينَ عَامًا» قِيلَ: وَمَا الْعَوَافِي؟ قَالَ: «الطَّيْرُ وَالسِّبَاعُ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque with a stick in his hand. He (peace and blessings be upon him) saw bunches of dates hanging up, and he poked one of the bunches with the stick, and it turned out to contain poor-quality dates. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who is the owner of this? If only he had given something better than this in charity. Indeed the owner of this will eat poor-quality dates on the Day of Resurrection." Then he said: "O people of Madinah, you will leave it for forty years to the awafi." It was asked: What are the 'awafi'? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Birds and beasts of prey."
