حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُقْرِيُ، ثنا كَهْمَسُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، قَالَ: قَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ: إِنِّي مُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَمْنَعُنِي أَنْ أُحَدِّثَكُمْ إِلَّا الضِّنُّ بِكُمْ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «حَرَسُ لَيْلَةٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، أَفْضَلُ مِنْ أَلْفِ لَيْلَةٍ يُقَامُ لَيْلُهَا وَيُصَامُ نَهَارُهَا»
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said while delivering a sermon on the pulpit: I will narrate to you a hadith that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and nothing kept me from narrating it to you except my being sparing with you. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Standing guard for one night in the path of Allah is better than a thousand nights whose nights are spent standing in prayer and whose days are spent fasting."
