Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We were sitting in the courtyard (of the house) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a woman passed by, and one of the people said: This is the daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon this a man said: The example of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) among Banu Hashim is like that of a sweet basil flower in the midst of a stench. The woman went and told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, with anger recognisable on his face, until he stood before the people and said: "What are these words that reach me from certain people? Indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created seven heavens and seven earths; He chose the highest of them and took it as His abode, and He settled in His heavens whomever He willed of His creation. And He created seven earths, and chose the highest of them and settled in it whomever He willed of His creation. And He created the creation, and from the creation He chose the children of Adam; from the children of Adam He chose the Arabs; from the Arabs He chose Mudar; from Mudar He chose Quraysh; from Quraysh He chose Banu Hashim; and from Banu Hashim He chose me. So I am the chosen of the chosen. Whoever loves the Arabs loves them because of his love for me, and whoever hates the Arabs hates them because of his hatred for me."
