حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَصَابَ النَّاسُ ضِبَابًا فاشَّوَوْهَا، فَأَكَلُوهَا، فَأَصَبْتُ مِنْهَا ضَبًّا فَشَوَيْتُهُ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ، فَأَخَذَ جَرِيدَةً فَجَعَلَ يَعُدُّ بِهَا أَصَابِعَهُ، فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ أُمَّةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ دَوَابَّ فِي الْأَرْضِ، وَإِنِّي أَرَاهَا لَعَلَّهَا هِيَ» فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ شَوَوْهَا، وأَكَلُوها، فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ وَلَمْ يَنْهَ
Sayyiduna Thabit bin Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people came upon some lizards, so they roasted them and ate them. I also got one of the lizards, so I roasted it, then brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) took a palm branch and began counting his fingers with it, then said: "A nation of the Children of Israel was transformed into creatures of the earth, and I see that perhaps this is it." I said: The people have already roasted it and eaten it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) neither ate it nor forbade it.
