حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا عَفَّانُ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ وَدِيعَةَ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي فَزَارَةَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، بِضِبَابٍ قَدِ احْتَرَشَهَا فَجَعَلَ يُقَلِّبُ ضَبًّا مِنْهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: «أُمَّةٌ مُسِخَتْ» ، وَأَكْبَرُ عِلْمِي، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «مَا أَدْرِي مَا فَعَلَتْ، وَمَا أَدْرِي لَعَلَّ هَذَا مِنْهَا»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thabit bin Wadi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Banu Fazarah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with some lizards (dabb) that he had caught. He (peace and blessings be upon him) began turning one of them over in front of him, then said: "This is a nation whose form was transformed." And I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "I do not know what became of it, and I do not know; perhaps this is from it."
