Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 12964 — concerning the saying of Allah Almighty

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "They ask you about the orphans. Say: Setting their affairs right is best" [Surah al-Baqarah: 220] - and this was before this verse was revealed: "Indeed, those who consume the wealth of orphans unjustly are only filling their bellies with fire, and they will burn in a blazing Fire" [Surah al-Nisa: 10] - the Muslims disliked eating together with the orphans and felt uneasy about mixing with them in any matter, so they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Say: Setting their affairs right is best; and if you mix with them, they are your brothers. Allah knows the one who causes corruption from the one who sets things right, and had Allah willed, He could have put you in hardship" [Surah al-Baqarah: 220] - meaning He would have made things narrow for you, but He granted ease and leniency. Then He said: "Whoever is rich, let him abstain, and whoever is poor, let him eat according to what is reasonable" [Surah al-Nisa: 6] - meaning that a poor man, when he is the guardian of an orphan's wealth, may eat from it in proportion to his looking after it and the benefit he brings to it, as long as he is not extravagant.
