Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A group of the Jews came one day to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Abu al-Qasim, tell us about some matters which we ask you about, which no one knows except a prophet. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask whatever you wish, but give me the covenant of Allah and the pledge that Ya'qub (peace be upon him) took from his sons, that if I tell you something and you recognise it, you will follow me." They said: That is yours. They said: We will ask you about four matters; tell us: Which food did Isra'il (Ya'qub, peace be upon him) make unlawful for himself before the Torah was revealed? And tell us how the woman's fluid relates to the man's fluid, and how a girl and a boy come from it? And tell us how this unlettered Prophet is among the people? And who is his ally (wali) among the angels? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then upon you is the covenant of Allah that if I tell you, you will follow me." So they gave him whatever covenant and pledge he wished. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I adjure you by the One who revealed the Torah to Musa (peace be upon him): do you know that Isra'il fell severely ill and his illness was prolonged, so he made a vow that if Allah cured him he would make unlawful for himself what was most beloved to him, the drink most beloved to him and the food most beloved to him; and the food most beloved to him was the meat of camels, and the drink most beloved to him was their milk?" They said: O Allah, yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness." Then he said: "I adjure you by Allah, besides whom there is no god: do you know that the man's fluid is thick and the woman's fluid is yellow and thin, and whichever of them prevails, the child and the resemblance follow it, by Allah's permission? If the man's fluid prevails, it is a boy by Allah's permission, and if the woman's fluid prevails, it is a girl by Allah's permission?" They said: O Allah, yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness." Then he said: "I adjure you by the One who revealed the Torah to Musa (peace be upon him): do you know that the eyes of this unlettered Prophet sleep but his heart does not sleep?" They said: O Allah, yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness." They said: Now tell us who your ally among the angels is; on this basis we will either join you or part from you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My ally is Jibril (peace be upon him), and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has never sent any prophet except that he was his ally." They said: Then on this basis we part from you. Had your ally been any angel other than him, we would have followed you and believed you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what prevents you from believing him?" They said: He is our enemy. On that occasion Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Whoever is an enemy to Jibril (let him know) that it is he who has brought it down upon your heart by Allah's permission, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and glad tidings for the believers. Whoever is an enemy to Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 98] up to "cast it behind their backs as if they did not know" [Surah al-Baqarah: 101]. On that occasion they returned with wrath upon wrath.
