Shu'bah, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), narrates that Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) while he was wearing a garment of brocade silk. He asked: What is this, O Abu al-Abbas? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: What is it? He said: This is istabraq (thick silk brocade). Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I know of no harm in it, and I think that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it, he forbade it only because of arrogance and pride, and we, praise be to Allah, are not like that." He asked: Then what are these images of birds on the brazier? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do you not see how we have burnt them with fire? When Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) left, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Take this garment off me, and cut off the heads of these statues or images."
