Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to his Companions with a piece of gold in his hand. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "What would Muhammad say to his Lord if he died while this was with him?" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it before getting up, then said: "It would not please me that the Companions of Muhammad had the like of this mountain" - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand towards Uhud - "in gold and silver, spending it in the path of Allah, and yet leaving even one dinar of it behind."
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "On the day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he left neither a dinar, nor a dirham, nor a slave, nor a slave-woman. He left his coat of mail pawned with a Jewish man for thirty sa' of barley, from which he used to eat himself and feed his family."
