Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 11177 — I wrote to Ibn Abbas

Ibn Abi Mulaykah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I wrote to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asking him about two women who used to stitch leather. One of them came out and claimed that her companion had struck her with an awl, while the other denied it. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had ruled: "The oath is upon the one against whom the claim is made. If people were given according to their claims, some people would claim the wealth and the blood of others. But call her (that is, the defendant)." So recite this verse to her: "Indeed, those who sell the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price, they will have no share in the Hereafter" [Al Imran: 77]. Ibn Abi Mulaykah said: So I did that, and she confessed. When this reached Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he was pleased with it.
