Reports about the Khawarij

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at Hunayn and was distributing the spoils of war (then the statement of a man was mentioned, who had said): "This is a distribution in which the pleasure of Allah has not been intended."
The narrator (Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him) says: After this incident I was present with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at the time when he killed them (the Khawarij) at Nahrawan. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) searched for that man, namely the mukhdaj (the one with the deformed limb); he was not found at first, but then he was found beneath a wall exactly matching the description and sign that had been given. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Which of you recognises this man?" A man from the people said: "We recognise him; this is Hurqus, and his mother is present here." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for his mother and asked her: "From whom is this (son)?" She replied: "O Commander of the Believers! I do not know; all that happened was that in the time of Jahiliyyah I was grazing my goats at al-Rabadhah when suddenly something like a shadow of darkness covered me, from which I conceived, and then this boy was born."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad; its chain is continuous up to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) through Muhammad bin Bakkar, Abu Ma'shar, Aflah bin Abdullah bin al-Mughirah, al-Zuhri and Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah.

It is narrated from Abu Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) that he was present with his master Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) at the time when he killed the people of Nahrawan (the Khawarij). The people began to feel some unease or distress in their hearts because of this killing and fighting, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to make the reality of the matter clear): "O people! Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me: 'Some people will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the game, and then they will never return to it. Remember! The sign of this is that among them will be a black man with a deficient hand; one of his hands will be like a woman's breast, with a nipple like the nipple of a woman's breast.'" The narrator says: I think he also said: "Around it (the nipple) there will be seven hairs." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered: "Search for him, for I firmly believe that he will be among these people." Then the people found him beneath the slain on the bank of the river, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called out: "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth." At that time Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had an Arabian bow slung on him, with the tip of which he was prodding that particular spot of the man's hand. The narrator relates that when the people saw him they were overjoyed and began giving one another glad tidings, and the unease or burden that was in their hearts disappeared completely.
Imam Ibn Abi Umar also narrated it through Abd al-Rahman bin Khalid, from Isma'il bin Muslim, from Abu Kathir, the mawla of the Ansar, that he was with his master Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him); then he related the whole story in words like those above.

It is narrated from a man of the tribe of Abd al-Qays that he said: I was present (on the battlefield) on the day the people of Nahrawan (the Khawarij) were killed. Then he narrated the complete hadith, in which it is mentioned: If a person's soul could depart (from the body) out of utmost joy and delight, then on that day the soul of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) would certainly have departed (because of the abundance of joy). At that time he (may Allah be pleased with him) said (about the truth of the event): "Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) have spoken the truth; and whoever told me that he had seen this man (the Khariji with the sign) (alive) among the people before his falling in this place of his death, then I am a liar."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it in his Musnad; its chain contains the narrator Abd al-Rahman bin al-Uryan al-Harithi, about whom there is disagreement, but the original incident is supported by other sahih narrations.
