وَقَالَ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كَثِيرٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ سَيِّدِي يَعْنِي : عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، حِينَ قَتَلَ أَهْلَ النَّهَرَوَانِ ، فَكَأَنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ وَجَدُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ مِنْ قَتْلِهِ . فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَدَّثَنِي : إِنَّ نَاسًا يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَخْرُجُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ، ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ أَبَدًا ، أَلَا وَإِنَّ آيَةَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ فِيهِمْ رَجُلًا أَسْوَدَ مُخْدَجَ الْيَدِ ، إِحْدَى يَدَيْهِ كَثَدْيِ امْرَأَةٍ ، لَهَا حَلَمَةٌ كَحَلَمَةِ الْمَرْأَةِ ، قَالَ : وَأَحْسَبُ ، قَالَ : حَوْلَهَا سَبْعُ هُلْبَاتٍ ، فَالْتَمِسُوهُ ، فَإِنِّي لَا أُرَاهُ إِلَّا مِنْهُمْ ، فَوَجَدُوهُ عَلَى شَفِيرِ النَّهَرِ ، تَحْتَ الْقَتْلَى ، فَقَالَ : صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، وَإِنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ لَمُتَقَلِّدًا قَوْسًا لَهُ عَرَبِيَّةً ، يَطْعَنُ بِهَا فِي مَخْرَجِهِ ، قَالَ : فَفَرِحَ النَّاسُ حِينَ رَأَوْهُ ، وَاسْتَبْشَرُوا ، وَذَهَبَ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَجِدُونَهُ .
4435 \ 2 - وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كَثِيرٍ مَوْلَى الْأَنْصَارِ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ سَيِّدِي عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، فَذَكَرَهُ .
4435 \ 2 - وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كَثِيرٍ مَوْلَى الْأَنْصَارِ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ سَيِّدِي عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، فَذَكَرَهُ .
It is narrated from Abu Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) that he was present with his master Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) at the time when he killed the people of Nahrawan (the Khawarij). The people began to feel some unease or distress in their hearts because of this killing and fighting, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to make the reality of the matter clear): "O people! Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me: 'Some people will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the game, and then they will never return to it. Remember! The sign of this is that among them will be a black man with a deficient hand; one of his hands will be like a woman's breast, with a nipple like the nipple of a woman's breast.'" The narrator says: I think he also said: "Around it (the nipple) there will be seven hairs." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered: "Search for him, for I firmly believe that he will be among these people." Then the people found him beneath the slain on the bank of the river, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called out: "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth." At that time Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had an Arabian bow slung on him, with the tip of which he was prodding that particular spot of the man's hand. The narrator relates that when the people saw him they were overjoyed and began giving one another glad tidings, and the unease or burden that was in their hearts disappeared completely.
Imam Ibn Abi Umar also narrated it through Abd al-Rahman bin Khalid, from Isma'il bin Muslim, from Abu Kathir, the mawla of the Ansar, that he was with his master Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him); then he related the whole story in words like those above.
