It is narrated from al-Ahnaf bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I came to Madinah during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and there I saw a man with a thick beard (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him) sitting before the people and speaking to them very harshly, so that the people dispersed from there. I said to him: "O servant of Allah, I think you have gone too far (by speaking so harshly)." He replied: "These people are compromisers and flatterers (in matters of religion). Do you know me?" I said: "No." He said: "I am Abu Dharr. Who are you?" I said: "I am from the people of Basrah." He said: "Shall I not tell you a hadith that I myself heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: 'Trials and afflictions will come in Iraq, and they will be (especially) in Kufah. As for the people of Basrah, they are the most correct of all the cities in the direction of their qiblah and have the most callers to prayer (mu'adhdhins), and Allah Almighty wards off from them what they dislike.'"
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the people of Kufah and stated: "Great trials and calamities will soon descend upon them." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the people of Basrah and said: "They are the best of the people of all the cities in the direction of their qiblah, they have the most mu'adhdhins, and what is hateful and disliked is kept away from them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I have not found huts made of reeds and rushes to be like the huts that were available in the blessed time of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); they were not like these (present lofty buildings of Kufah)."
Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) says: By «al-akhsas» we mean houses that are made of reeds or rushes.
