It is narrated from Abbad bin Abdullah al-Asadi (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I was present in the mosque on Friday while Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering the sermon on a pulpit made of bricks. Sa'sa'ah bin Suhan was behind me. Meanwhile a man said something to him (may Allah be pleased with him) in a whisper which remained hidden from us; we saw signs of anger on the blessed face of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he fell silent. Then al-Ash'ath bin Qays came, stepping over the necks of the people until he came near him, and said: "O Commander of the Believers, these red-complexioned people (the non-Arabs and freed clients) have overcome us in your presence (that is, they have gone ahead of us in nearness to you)." At this Sa'sa'ah struck me between my shoulders with his hand and said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). Today Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) will disclose a truth concerning the Arabs which he had kept hidden until now (out of prudence)." The narrator said: Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) became intensely angry and said: "Who will accept my excuse against these bulky, comfort-loving people? Each of them lies about on his soft, fine bedding and keeps aloof from people who remember Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and then he orders me to drive them (the sincere ones) away from me so that I become one of the wrongdoers? [Surah al-An'am: 52]. By the One who split the seed and created the living soul! I heard Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'By Allah, (a time will come when) these people will strike you for the sake of the religion, just as you struck them at the beginning of Islam.'"
Ishaq said: Narrators other than Jarir named this person (in the chain) Abbad bin Abdullah al-Asadi. I (Ibn Hajar) say: It is as he said.
Al-Harith said that Abu al-Nadr narrated the hadith to us; he said: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us from al-A'mash, from al-Minhal bin Amr, from Abbad bin Abdullah al-Asadi, that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering a sermon while the mawali (non-Arabs) had surrounded him; then he mentioned the whole hadith.
Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah narrated it from Sharik, from al-A'mash, from al-Minhal, from Abbad bin Abdullah.
Abu Ya'la said that Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah narrated this hadith to us with the same chain.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) (as a hadith) that he said: "If faith were hanging from the Pleiades (stars), some people from among the people of Persia would surely attain it."
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated it with the chain of Abu Bakr and Harun bin Ma'ruf from Sufyan, while Imam al-Bazzar transmitted it explicitly as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (marfu'), and it is also mentioned in it that the narrator probably said the words "Banu al-Hamra'," that is, "the mawali" (non-Arabs). This hadith is sahih (authentic).
