It is narrated from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) that when Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to emigrate to Madinah, the disbelievers of Quraysh said to him: "You came to us as an utterly poor and destitute man, then living among us your wealth increased greatly and you reached the (wealthy) position you are in today, and now you wish to leave here with both your life and your wealth! By Allah, that will never happen." He asked them: "What do you think: if I hand over all my wealth to you, will you let me go?" They replied: "Yes." He said: "I take you as witnesses that I have handed over all my wealth to you." When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Suhayb has profited, Suhayb has profited."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) provided that Abu Uthman's hearing from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) is established; and indeed Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i narrated it from Awf, from Abu Uthman, from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him), that Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When I intended (to emigrate)" - then the narrator mentioned a similar account. Thus the connection of its chain is established, and all praise belongs to Allah. Ibn Marduyah narrated it with a connected chain in his Tafsir from the hadith of Ja'far; and it has a supporting report from the narration of Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him), which was mentioned earlier in the Tafsir of Surah al-Baqarah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Suhayb, there are three traits in you that I dislike." He explained: "Your feeding people although you have no wealth, your taking a kunyah although you have no child, and your attributing yourself to the Arabs although there is an accent (a non-Arab trace) in your speech." Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "As for the feeding of people that you mentioned, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The best of you is the one who feeds others.' And by Allah, I will never give up feeding people." Then he mentioned his kunyah and said: "Upon it I live and upon it I shall die." And regarding his lineage he said: "I am Suhayb bin Sinan," until he traced his lineage back to al-Namir bin Qasit, and he said: "I used to graze the livestock of my family when the Romans raided and took me captive; then they taught me their language, and that is the reason for the accent you see in my speech."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: This chain is gharib (unusual). Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it through Hamzah bin Suhayb, that Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) - then he mentioned something similar; however, this version is more complete and detailed. Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated part of it, and Imam Ibn Majah (may Allah have mercy on him) related another part. I have included it here only because of the unusualness of its chain and the completeness of its wording.
