Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4032 — The virtue of al-Nabighah al-Ja'di

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Nabighah al-Ja'di (may Allah be pleased with him): I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recited to him these verses of mine: "Indeed, we are a valiant people who do not accustom our horses to flee or bolt in fright when we meet the enemy; and on the day of battle the colours of our horses change from the constant thrusts of the spears, until you would think even a jet-black horse to be reddish from the redness of the blood; and it is not our way to bring our horses back (from the battlefield) safe and sound, nor do we find it objectionable that they be rolled in the dust of the battlefield; our nobility and the greatness of our forefathers have reached the heights of the sky, and we seek a place of appearance and elevation even higher than that." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "To where?" (that is, what place above the sky is intended?) I said: "To Paradise." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, if Allah Almighty wills." Sayyiduna al-Nabighah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: When I recited these verses before him (peace and blessings be upon him): "And there is no good in forbearance and gentleness that has no boldness and vigour to protect it and keep its calm and purity from being muddied; and there is no good in foolishness that has no man of sense and wisdom with it who, when a matter arises, can resolve it and bring it to a proper conclusion," the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for him: 'La yafdudillahu fak' (May Allah Almighty keep your teeth sound and never break them). The narrator relates that through the blessing of this prophetic supplication, Sayyiduna al-Nabighah (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most handsome of all people in respect of his teeth, and his state was such that if (in old age) one of his teeth fell out, a new tooth would grow in its place.
Imam al-Harith bin Abi Usamah narrated this hadith in his Musnad.
